Tallemant des Reaux, Gedeon (circa 1619-1700), French writer, born at La Rochelle, settled in early life on the estate of Des Reaux in Touraine. His Historiettes, written between 1657 and 1659, throw much light on the state of society and characters of the leading actors in contemporary history; they were first published in 1834.

“Two things are necessary to the life of pure faith. The first is, that we behold God alone, under all the imperfect coverings that conceal him; the second is, constantly to have our souls kept in a state of dependence.”
