Munkacsy, Michael, was born of poor parents at Munkacs, in Hungary, in 1846. In 1870 he exhibited The Last Day of a Condemned Prisoner in the Paris Salon, and his merit received immediate recognition. Among his best-known works are, Milton dictating to his Daughters, Christ before Pilate, Calvary, The Last Moments of Mozart, most of which have been seen in England.
