Epernay

Epernay, a French town, in the department of Marne, and on the river Marne, 20 miles N.E. of Chalons. It is the centre of the champagne district, and it is estimated that about 5,000,000 bottles yearly are stored in its cellars, 80,000 of which come from the Epernay district. The wine cellars are galleries quarried in the tufa of which the soil is formed. There are manufactures of corks, barrels, and other necessaries of the wine trade.
