Colfax

Colfax, Schuyler (1823-1885), an American journalist and politician, born at New York. In 1845 he acquired a newspaper in Indiana and made it an influential Whig journal. From 1854 till 1860 he was a Republican member of Congress, and was three times chosen Speaker. He was chosen Vice President of the United States in 1868, but, being implicated in certain political charges in 1873, he retired into private life.
