Chatelet Lomont

Chatelet-Lomont, Marquise du (1700-1749), a learned Parisian lady, who, to a knowledge of Latin and Italian, mathematics, and physical science, added great wit and beauty. She is said to have been successively the mistress of Voltaire (who lived with her at one of her husband's chateaux for several years), and of a Captain of French Guards. She wrote Institutions de Physique and made a French translation of Newton's Principia.
