Chandler, Richard, archaeologist, was born in 1738 at Elson, Hampshire. After publishing his Marmora Oxoniensia. he travelled through Greece and Asia Minor with the help of the Dilettanti Society for the purpose of examining and describing the antiquities of these regions. The results were given in Ionian Antiquities, Ancient Inscriptions, Travels in Asia Minor, Travels in Greece, and History of Ilium. He died in 1810 at Tilehurst, Berkshire.
