Bloomington. 1. the capital of Monroe county, Indiana, U.S.A., is situated 46 miles S.W. of Indianapolis. It is unimportant, save as being the seat of the university of Indiana.

2. The capital of M'Lean county, Illinois, U.S.A., 125 miles S.S.W. of Chicago; is an important railway centre, and has large works and also coal-mines. Educationally it, too, is a place of importance, containing a Wesleyan university, the Normal university of Illinois, a Roman Catholic academy, and a women's college.
