Zanzibar

Zanzibar, or Zanguebar, an island lying off the east coast of Africa, making up, with the neighbouring island of Pemba, an area of 985 square miles. The territory on the mainland formerly extended from Tanghi Bay S. to Warsheik N. (1,100 miles), but the S. portion as far as Wanga was ceded to Germany in 1890. In that year then Sultan Seyyid Ali accepted a British protectorate, and the revenue, troops, and other administrations are in British hands.
