Trebizond (Turkish Tarabzun), the capital of a pasbalic of Turkey in Asia, situated on the Black Sea, near its S.E. extremity. Its importance is due to its position on the great trade-route from Europe to Persia and Central Asia, The town stands on a sloping plateau, and is surrounded by ancient Byzantine walls with picturesque towers. The ancient Greek city of Trapezus was founded by colonists from Sinope about 700 B.C.
