St Denis

St. Denis, a French town in the department of Seine, five miles N. of Paris. The abbey, built by Dagobert in the 7th century on the site of an old chapel which marked the resting-place of St. Denis, became the place of burial for the French sovereigns. The existing structure, begun by the Abbe Suger, was restored by Viollet-le-Duc in 1848 the following years.
