Smart John

Smart, JOHN, R.S.A., born in 1838, received an artistic training at the Trustees School, whence he went to MacCulloch's studio. He began to exhibit landscapes in 1861, and was elected an Associate of the Scotch Academy in 1871, reaching the full dignity six years later. Among his best works were Where Silence Reigns, The Graves of our ain Folk, The Land of MacGregor, The Cradle of Argyll, Among the Silent Hills, The Pass qf Brander, and The Golf Greens of Scotland. He died in 1899.
