Rye House Plot
Rye House Plot, THE, was formed in 1683, and had for its object the assassination of Charles II. and James, Duke of York, on their return from the Newmarket races. Its object was defeated, put its instigator, Colonel Walcot, was executed, as were Lord William Russell and Algernon Sidney, who were accused of being implicated in the movement of which it was part. Lord Essex escaped the blook by suicide.
