Romanesque

Romanesque, in architecture, is the style that prevailed in the early mediseval age from the 5th to the 12th century. The 1st period (5th to 11th) was a more or less debased form of Roman; but in the 2nd period (11th and 12th) it developed peculiarities of its own. The semi-circular arch and the massive masonry of Saxon and Norman architecture were borrowed from Romanesque.
