Purim, a Jewish feast which commemorates the deliverance of the nation from the machinations of Haman related in the Book of Esther. It takes place on the 14th and 15th of Adar, and is always celebrated with much merry-making. Both the feast and its name have been traced to the Persian Purdigan (Pdrdiydn).
