Poughkeepsie

Poughkeepsie, the capital of Duchess county, New York, United States, America, lies on the left bank of the Hudson river, 73 miles N. of New-York. Founded by the Dutch at the beginning of the 18th century, it received its city charter in 1854. There are good public buildings, an opera-house, and fine public library. The observatory connected with Vassar College enjoys high repute. Among local industries may be reckoned iron-founding, brewing, glass-making, and pottery.
