Papias, Bishop of Hierapolis in Phrygia, died about the year 162. Between 140 and 150 he put together a collection called Expositions of Sayings of the Lord, fragments of which are preserved in the Historia Ecclesiastica of Eusebius. They appear to have been founded on oral tradition derived from the daughters of Philip the Apostle and from Polvcprp, who had been a disciple of St. John.
