Oswald

Oswald, St. (604-42), King of the Northumbrians, was the son of Ethelfrith, after whose death in battle in 617 he took refuge among the northern Celts, who are said to have converted him. In 633 he returned to Northumbria, and two years after made himself master of Deira and Bernicia by a victory which he commemorated by constructing a cross. He christianised his people, and was killed in battle at Oswestry, becoming afterwards one of the most popular of north-country saints.
