Locust Tree

Locust-Tree (Robinia Pseud-acacia),the Falsi Acacia, is a leguminous tree, reaching 50 or 80 fee: in height, native of the United States. Its root have the smell and taste of liquorice, but an poisonous. Its wood is yellowish, but when onli five years old turns brown at the heart, and is hare and durable. The bark is deeply furrowed, anc comes away in strips. The leaves are deciduoui and imparipinnate, with spinous stipules, and thi flowers are in pendulous racemes of white papilion aceous blossoms. The wood is useful for posts anc tree-nails, but splinters. It was extravagantly be lauded by William Cobbett (q.v.). The fruit of another leguminous tree, Ceratonia Siliqua, is known as Locust-beans. [Caeob.]
