Komorn

Komorn (Komarom), a town in Hungary, situated at the junction of the Danube and Raab, 48 miles N.W. of Buda-Pesth, on an island called Gross Schutz, connected with the mainland by a bridge of boats. Since the 13th century it has been one of the strongest fortresses in Europe, and was besieged unsuccessfully by the Turks twice in the 16th and once in the 17th century. The fortifications were improved early in the 19th, and it held out against the Austrians for eleven months in 1848-49. The town is poor, and its trade unimportant.
