Imbros

Imbros (mod. Imvro), an island in the Mgean Sea, about fourteen miles from the entrance to the Dardanelles, between Samothraki and Lemnos. It has an area of 105 square miles, most of which is covered by bare and rugged mountains. There is only one river of importance, and lack of water is a bar to agriculture. Kastro, the capital, is a mere village on the coast, Theodore, Gliki, and Paneigia being still poorer communities. The island has formed part of Asiatic Turkey since the 15th century, and is the seat of a Greek Metropolitan, the Exarch of the AEgean.
