Hurricane

Hurricane, any violent storm of wind, especially a circular one as experienced in the tropics. The velocity of the wind on these occasions sometimes reaches 120 miles an hour. According to the accepted Beaufort Notation, a hurricane has a force of 12, and the wind has a minimum velocity of 100 miles an hour, with a pressure of 49-2 lbs. per square foot. The fall of the barometer ranges from TO to 2'5 inches, the rapidity of the fall increasing as the centre of the storm approaches. In hurricane districts any fall greater than -35 inch may be regarded as a sure warning of approaching danger.
