Honthorst, Gerhard van, called "Geraedo Dalle Notti" (1590-1056), Butch painter, born at Utrecht, studied at Rome, where lie was much influenced by the paintings of Caravaggio. He came to England in 1620, and again in 1628, and was patronised by Charles I. He excelled in depicting night scenes, generally illumined by the light of torches or candles.
