After making several distinguished converts in America, whither he hail been taken at the age of nine, he came to London in 1855, and held seances which were patronised by Lord Brougham, Sir David Brewster, and other men eminent in politics, letters, and science. During the next seventeen years he continued to display his skill in England, France, and Italy (where, in 1855, he became a Roman Catholic), but he was not a professional medium, and received no payment for his exhibitions.
