Guaipunavos

Guaipunavos, Venezuelan Indians of the Amazonas territory, on both sides of the Inirida which flows to the right hand of the Guaviare affluent of the Orinoco. The Guaipunavos were formerly a very powerful nation, ruling over nearly the wdiole of the vast region which now bears the name of Amazonas. Later their supremacy was disputed by the Maratibanos, who ascended the Cassiquiare from the Rio Negro, and in the struggle vanquished their renowned chief Cruseru. At present they are confined to the Inirida valley, where they bear the name of Puinabos, evidently a corrupt form of Guaipunevos. (Fr. Montolieu in Bulletin de la Soc. de Geoyraphie, April, 1880.)
