Gros

Gros, Antoine Jean, Baron (1771-1835), was a French painter who occupied in art an intermediate place between the classical and the romantic schools. He was born at Paris, where his father was a miniature painter, and in 1785 began to study under David. He was with Napoleon in Italy, and one of his subjects was Napoleon on the bridge at Areola. His principal works were Les Pestifere's de Jaffa, The Battle of Aboukir, and The Battle of Eglau, and he had many pupils in his palmy days. Latterly his work fell off in quality, and eventually he committed suicide. Napoleon made him baron of the Empire.
