Friedland, Valentin, also surnamed Trotzendorpf, from his birthplace in Upper Lusatia, attained high repute as a teacher. In 1518, at the age of 28, he visited Wittenberg, where he came under the influence of Luther and Melancthon, with whom he contracted a warm friendship. A few years later he was appointed rector of the Gymnasium at Goldberg in Silesia, and achieved great success. He died in 1556.
