Damiani

Damiani, Pietro (1007-1072), an ecclesiastic who, born at Ravenna, rose from being a swineherd to the dignity of Cardinal and Bishop of Ostia in 1057. He was a great supporter of Hildebrand (Gregory VII., q.v.), by whom he was employed on many important missions. Among his writings are many Letters and Speeches.

“God prevents our being proud of ourselves by the experience of our weakness and corruption, which is manifest by our numberless relapses.”
Fenelon
