Cystiphyllum

Cystiphyllum, an extinct genus of corals belonging to the order Rugosa (q.v.) and the type of the class Cystiphyllidae. The main character of this family is that the centre of the coral is occupied by a mass of irregular, vesicular tissue, and neither the radial septa nor the transverse horizontal "tabulae" (q.v.) are continued across it. The genus is especially common in the Upper Silurian and Devonian limestones.
