Couplings, in Engineering, are the arrangements by which one piece of shafting may directly transmit its motion to another piece in the same line. Flange-couplings have two flanges, each firmly fixed to its piece of shafting, butting close against each other, and held together by bolts. One of the pieces may be arranged to slide along the shaft, so as to engage or disengage itself with the other.
