Coppers, a group of butterflies of the genus Lycaena, the type of Lycaenidae (q.v.). They derive their popular name from their copper-red colour. Polymmatus phlaeas is the commonest British species and is fairly widely distributed. The large copper Polymmatus hippothoae is now extinct, though it lived till comparatively recently in the Fens.
