Note:  Do not rely on this information. It is very old.

Coffee-house now generally signifies a house of refreshment, where food is supplied, but no fermented or spirituous liquors. In the 18th century the coffee-house occupied much of the position now taken up by social clubs, and was the resort of poets, wits, and politicians, who went to drink their coffee and smoke their churchwarden. The Continental cafe seems to be difficult to introduce among us.
