Clef

Clef, in Music, a character placed at the beginning of a stave, to indicate the pitch and names of the notes on that stave. The number of clefs in common use is three, viz.: the Treble or G-clef, the Bass or F-cleff, and the Tenor or C-clef. Other clefs which were formerly in use are the Soprano, the Alto, and the Gregorian clefs.
