Caledonian Canal

Caledonian Canal stretches in a north easterly direction across Scotland from the Irish Sea to the North Sea. Its length is 60 miles, about 40 of which are occupied by natural lakes. It was begun in 1803 under Telford, and completed in 1823. It cost upwards of £1,300,000. Its locks number twenty-seven.
