Bass Strait

Bass Strait, the strait which separates Van Diemen's Land or Tasmania from Australia, so named from the discoverer (1798), a surgeon in the British navy. Its breadth is 150 miles, and it contains a few islets rich in guano, and occupied by a small English colony.
