Aurungabad

Aurungabad, a city in Haiderabad, the kingdom of the Nizam, India. It derives its name from Aurungzebe, and was founded in 1620, on the site of the village of Gourka, as the capital of the Mogul dominions in S. India. When the Nizams transferred the seat of government to Haiderabad it lost much of its previous importance, and is now half-ruinous. Still its fine bazaars do a large trade in silk, shawls, and native produce. Three or four other places bear the same name.
