Achelous

Achelous, a river of Epirus, which, rising in the Pindus range, and flowing between AEtolia and Acarnania, empties itself into the Ionian Sea, where its silt forms a group of small islands known as the AEchinades. Its name, celebrated by many poets, from Hesiod downwards, became almost a synonym for water.
