AEgis

AEgis, in Homer, the shield of Zeus (Jupiter). Later the term was used for the shield of Athene (Minerva), and was represented as a sort of breastplate with Medusa's head in the centre, and fringed with snakes. It is symbolic of a shielding or protecting power.
