The Gospel According to John

20:1 The first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early, when it was yet dark, to the tomb, and saw the stone taken away from the tomb.

20:2 Then she ran, and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.

20:3 Therefore Peter went forth, with the other disciple, toward the tomb.

20:4 So they both ran together: and the other disciple outran Peter, and came first to the tomb.

20:5 And he stooped down, and looked in, and saw the linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in.

20:6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb, and saw the linen wrappings lying there,

20:7 And the cloth, which had been around his head, was not lying with the linen wrappings, but was rolled up in a place by itself.

20:8 Then the other disciple, who came first to the tomb, went in also and he saw, and believed.

20:9 For as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.

20:10 Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.

20:11 But Mary stood outside the tomb weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the tomb,

20:12 And saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.

20:13 And they said to her, Woman, why do you weep? She said to them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.

20:14 And when she had said this, she turned around, and saw Jesus standing, but did not know that it was Jesus.

20:15 Jesus said to her, Woman, why do you weep? whom do you seek? She, supposing him to be the gardener, said to him, Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.

20:16 Jesus said to her, Mary. She turned, and said to him, Rabboni; which is to say, Teacher.

20:17 Jesus said to her, Do not hold me; for I have not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say to them, I ascend to my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.

20:18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things to her.

20:19 Then at evening of the same day, the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst, and said to them, Peace be with you.

20:20 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

20:21 Then Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you: as my Father has sent me, even so I send you.

20:22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit:

20:23 If you forgive the sins of any one, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any one, they are retained.

20:24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.

20:25 The other disciples said to him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I shall see in his hands the mark of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.

20:26 After eight days his disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them: then Jesus came, though the doors were shut, and stood in their midst, and said, Peace be with you.

20:27 Then he said to Thomas, Reach here with your finger, and behold my hands; and reach here with your hand, and thrust it into my side: and do not be faithless, but believing.

20:28 And Thomas said to him, My Lord and my God.

20:29 Jesus said to him, [Thomas,] because you have seen me, you have believed: blessed are those who have not seen, and yet have believed.

20:30 Now Jesus performed many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:

20:31 But these are written, that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you might have life through his name.

21:1 After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way:

21:2 Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples were together.

21:3 Simon Peter said to them, I am going fishing. They said to him, We will go with you. They went forth, and entered a boat; but that night they caught nothing.

21:4 But when the morning was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.

21:5 Then Jesus said to them, Children, have you any fish? They answered him, No.

21:6 And he said to them, Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you shall find some. Therefore they cast it, and they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.

21:7 Therefore the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, (for he was stripped for work,) and cast himself into the sea.

21:8 And the other disciples came in the boat; (for they were not far from land, only about a hundred yards,) dragging the net full of fish.

21:9 As soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread.

21:10 Jesus said to them, Bring some of the fish which you have caught.

21:11 Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land, full of great fish, a hundred and fifty-three: and though there were so many, yet the net was not broken.

21:12 Jesus said to them, Come and have breakfast. And none of the disciples dared ask him, Who are you? knowing that it was the Lord.

21:13 Then Jesus came, and took bread, and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.

21:14 This was now the third time that Jesus showed himself to his disciples, after he had risen from the dead.

21:15 So when they had eaten, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you. He said to him, Feed my lambs.

21:16 He said to him a second time, Simon, son of John, do you love me? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you. He said to him, Tend my sheep.

21:17 He said to him a third time, Simon, son of John, do you love me? Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, Do you love me? And he said to him, Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my sheep.

21:18 Truly, truly, I say to you, When you were young, you girded yourself, and walked where you wanted: but when you grow old, you shall stretch forth your hands, and another shall gird you, and carry you where you do not want to go.

21:19 This he spoke to signify by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he said to him, Follow me.

21:20 Then Peter, turning about, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following; the one who had leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, who is the one who betrays you?

21:21 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, Lord, what about this man?

21:22 Jesus said to him, If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? you follow me.

21:23 Then this saying went abroad among the brethren, that this disciple should not die: yet Jesus did not said to him, He shall not die; but, If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?

21:24 This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.

21:25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which, if every one of them were to be written, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.
