Toul: Anciently the Roman Tullum Lencorum. A fortified town in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle. Its bishopric dating from the fifth century was suppressed by Napoleon. From the later Middle Ages until 1552 Toul was a free city of the German empire. The first sector of the Allied line in France to be taken over by American troops during the First World War was located near Toul.
