Tennessee: Tributary of the Ohio River, which gives name to a State of the Union. Three different derivations are given the name. From Tanase, the name of the most important village of the Cherokee Indians; from an Indian word meaning "a curved spoon"; or from Taensa, an Indian tribe of the Watchesan family.
