Tartary: The old name, now fallen into disuse, for Turkistan, the parts of Central Asia which are inhabited by the Nomads of Turkic race called Tartars or Tatars. The name is said to have arisen out of the designation Tha-ta, "robbers," applied by the Chinese to the Mongols.
