Syracuse: The greatest Greek colony in Sicily, is believed to have replaced an older Phenician trading post which obtained its name from a marsh at the mouth of the Anapus called Syraco, "to stink." Also, city in Onondaga County, New York, named for the ancient city of Sicily, after passing through the names of Bogardus Comers, Milan, South Salina, Cossitt's Corners, and Corinth. In 1820, its present name was adopted at the suggestion of John Wilkinson, its first postmaster.
