| Meaning of Place Name: ScandinaviaScandinavia: A convenient name for the Swedish and Norwegian Peninsula, adopted from a passage in Pliny where the correct reading is probably Scadinavia, which Mr. Bradley refers to the Teutonic shadino, "dark." Scadinavia, the "land of darkness," was possibly at first a mythical name for the dark North, which was afterwards applied to the Swedish Peninsula.
