Sardinia: Italian Sardegna. Bears the name of the Sardi, its early inhabitants, who may possibly be identified with the Shardina, or Shardana, one of the northern races who attacked Egypt in the reign of Meneptah. Another view is that it expresses the "land of the Sardonion," a Greek term for a plant indigenous to this island.
