Plantagenet, House of: A line of English kings (1154-1399) founded by Henry II., son of Geoffrey, count of Anjou, and Matilda, daughter of Henry I. of England. It is said to have been assumed by the first count of that name from his having caused himself to be scourged with branches of broom (planta genesta) as penance for some crime he had committed.
