Petrograd (St. Petersburg): Formerly the capital of Russia, founded by Peter the Great, who, having in 1702 taken the Swedish forts on the Neva, in the following year laid the foundations of a fort which he called Peterburg (Fort Peter), on an island in the Neva, the nucleus and now the most densely populated portion of the city. In 1914, by Russian imperial decree, the name St. Petersburg was changed to Petrograd, later to Lenningrad, and now it has been changed to St. Petersburg again.
