Pere-la-Chaise or Pere Lachaise: The French cemetery so named is the site of a great monastery founded by Louis XIV., of which Pere la Chaise, a favorite confessor of that luxurious monarch, was the first superior. He died in 1709. After the Revolution, the grounds were laid out for a cemetery.
