Old Dominion: A name popularly given to the State of Virginia. Its origin is variously explained. Perhaps the best account is that Captain John Smith called Virginia "Old Virginia" to distinguish it from "New Virginia," as the New England colony was called. The colony of Virginia was alluded to in documents as "the colony and dominion of Virginia"; hence the phrase, "the Old Dominion."
