Meaning of Place Name: New Mexico
New Mexico: A distinguishing name from "old" Mexico, it having been a former possession of Mexico; Mexico from the Aztec god, "Mexitli." The territory was called Nova Mexicana by Antonio de Espejo at the time of the settlement of Santa Fe.
