Madrid: Capital of Spain since 1560. The name is usually explained from the Arabic madarat, a "town." But the early form Mazerit or Magerit, given in the Chronicle of Sampiro, points to materita, a "small wood" or "copse," a diminutive of materia, as the true etymology.
